A step-by-step guide to reclaiming your domain name when it’s been passed between platforms without your knowledge

If you registered a domain through VistaPrint, you might be in for a surprise when you try to manage it. That’s exactly what happened to me when I was helping a client transfer their domain to a new host.

What should’ve been a straightforward domain transfer turned into a maze of redirects, outsourced support, and unanswered questions. Here's how I navigated it — and how you can too if you find yourself in the same situation.

🧩 The Problem: Domain “Managed by a Third Party”

The client’s domain, was originally registered with VistaPrint. When I tried to manage it via the Wix dashboard (which VistaPrint now uses for websites), it showed the domain was “managed by a third party.” No way to unlock it, no EPP/Auth code, no real control.

After checking the domain’s WHOIS record, I saw it was registered through Tucows — a major domain registrar. That gave me hope… until VistaPrint told me they had nothing to do with the domain anymore and referred me to Hover.

🚩 What Actually Happened

Back in 2021–2022, VistaPrint quietly stopped offering domains directly and migrated them to Hover (a retail brand owned by Tucows). Many customers, including my client, weren’t clearly informed or didn’t recall getting any notice.

The domain — and the registrant’s personal data — had been moved to a new provider without providing login credentials or ongoing access.

🛠️ How I Got the Domain Back

After a lot of back-and-forth with VistaPrint support (and a bit of polite but firm pressure), here’s what finally worked:

  1. Confirmed the registrar:
Used https://who.is to confirm the domain was with Tucows.

  2. Pushed VistaPrint to escalate:
I reminded them that WHOIS info includes personal data protected under GDPR, and that denying access to a domain tied to a brand can have intellectual property implications.

  3. Got Hover account access:
After pressure, VistaPrint support contacted Hover and helped retrieve login details.

  4. Logged in to Hover:

    • Disabled the domain lock

    • Retrieved the EPP/Auth code

  5. Initiated the transfer to 20i:

    • Started the transfer from the new provider (20i)

    • Approved the confirmation email sent to the registrant

    • Transfer now in progress

💡 Lessons Learned

  • Always register domains through a proper registrar (like 20i, Namecheap, or 123 Reg) where you control renewals, DNS, and transfers.

  • If you bought a domain through a third party like VistaPrint, check whether it's still active and under your control.

  • Use a WHOIS lookup tool to find out who the real registrar is and what email is tied to the domain.

  • If things get messy, don’t be afraid to mention GDPR, ICANN rules, or your registrant rights — especially with .org, .com, or .net domains.

🔐 Final Thoughts

Domain names are more than just website addresses — they’re part of your identity, brand, and digital ownership. If a company moves your domain without clear consent or makes it hard to access, you have a right to push back.

This experience was frustrating, but in the end, it reinforced an important point: control over your domain is non-negotiable.
