“Pages / Session” in Google Analytics refers to the average number of pages viewed during a session, with a session being the period a user is actively engaged with your website. This metric is used to measure user engagement, as more page views could indicate more interest and engagement with the content of the site.

However, in Google Analytics 4 (GA4), the traditional “Pages / Session” metric has been replaced with different metrics due to changes in how sessions are defined and how user interactions are tracked. GA4 focuses on events and user engagement more than just page views. The equivalent insights in GA4 can be found under different metrics, such as:

  • Engaged Sessions: A session that lasted longer than 10 seconds, had a conversion event, or had 2 or more screen or page views.
  • Engagement Rate: The number of engaged sessions divided by the total number of sessions.
  • Average Engagement Time: The average time that a user is actively engaged with the website during a session.

In GA4, you can still analyse the number of page views during a session by creating a custom report or looking at specific events, but the direct “Pages / Session” metric is no longer a standard report like it was in Universal Analytics.
