If you’ve ever bought a domain name or hosting, you’ve probably seen an extra charge on your bill for something called “Domain Security” or “Domain Privacy.” It can look important (who doesn’t want their domain to be secure?), but the reality is often different.
Let’s unpack what it really means.
The Old World: WHOIS Privacy
Years ago, when you registered a domain, your name, address, phone number, and email went into the public WHOIS database. Spammers and scammers used this to target website owners.
Registrars offered WHOIS Privacy (sometimes called “Domain Privacy”), which replaced your details with theirs. That meant fewer spam calls and emails.
The New World: GDPR Protection
Today things have changed. Thanks to GDPR and similar privacy laws, your personal details are no longer published by default — at least if you’re an individual registering a domain in the UK or EU.
That means the main reason for charging extra for “privacy” has effectively disappeared. Your data is already protected by law.
What Hosting Companies Call “Domain Security”
Despite this, many providers still charge yearly fees for “Domain Security.” What are you really paying for? Usually, it’s a bundle of things like:
- Domain privacy (which GDPR already covers).
- Domain locking (normally free with most registrars).
- SSL certificates (but free options like Let’s Encrypt exist).
- DNSSEC (genuine extra protection, but not always included).
- Sometimes even malware scans or “site protection” (which isn’t domain-related at all).
So, Should You Pay for It?
In many cases, no. If a host is charging extra for “domain security,” it’s often just a rebranded upsell. The essentials — privacy redaction, domain lock, and SSL — should be free.
How Polyspiral Does It Differently
At Polyspiral, we don’t believe in charging for things you don’t need.
- Your data is already protected by law.
- SSL certificates are included.
- Domain locking is free.
- DNSSEC is available where supported.
We’d rather be honest with you than pad out your invoice with unnecessary extras.
✅ The takeaway: Don’t get caught paying for “domain security” you already have. Ask what’s really included, and choose a host that gives you clear, fair value
