Plagiarism - copying from another website
Please don’t do this EVER!
This is where someone has copied from another website and used it as their own.
From an SEO point of view, Google and Bing will assume the later copy is plagiarism and remove it from their listings.
Even if the above wasn’t the case, copying text from another will mean the it won’t be written quite how you write elsewhere on the site. If a website visitor reads one page and then the copied text it may make them suspicious or at least be a bit jarring. If the visitor sees you’ve copied which might be less likely it will certainly mean they will think less of you or your organisation. This is more likely if someone is looking for a specific service, for example a plumber in a local area, they will be reading the text, so DON”T copy from your competitors it will mean missing out on genuine enquiries as you will be found out.
You could also be subject to legal action. When content is published on a website, it is the intellectual property of the writer, if you copy this you could be liable to be sued by them.
Duplicate content within the same site
Users may become frustrated if they come across the same content multiple times on a website. Poor user experience means they’ll leave the website and not make an inquiry. If you need to point to content already written as we have above with the SEO link, then do just that, link it to a page. With blog writing, if I feel the reader ought to know something I’ve already written about, I put a link in a bit like this: see Why does fresh content matter to Google? This means if people want to know more they can read that, if they already know, they can carry on reading without you having to copy the text in different places on your website.
So duplicate content can harm your website's visibility, reputation and user experience and can lead to legal issues. It's important to check for and remove any duplicate content from your website to avoid these problems.
